ELDHÁTÍÐ / FIRE FESTIVAL

JULY 5-7, 2024

IT’S GOING TO BE HOT!

Event Information

Viking house at Eiríksstaðir

Eldhátíð (Fire Festival) is a festival of experimental archaeology, using science to explore the Viking-age battle tactic of burning down a longhouse.

In August 2019, Hurstwic and Eiríksstaðir joined forces in a festival of experimental archaeology on the smelting of iron in Viking-age Iceland. Our research results changed the idea Icelanders had about their Viking ancestors and became a special exhibit at the National Museum of Iceland. This year, we plan to change some more ideas.

A go-to battle tactic in the Viking age was to burn down an opponent’s house. The tactic is mentioned numerous times in literary sources and in law codes from the Viking age. Hurstwic and Eiríksstaðir, in association with the National Museum of Iceland, and the Icelandic Forestry Service plan to scientifically test the tactic using experimental archaeology, in a public festival held at Eiríksstaðir.

The festival will take place at the replica Viking-age turfhouse at Eiríksstaðir in Haukadalur in the west of Iceland on Friday-Sunday, July 5-7, 2024. The festival opens each day at 10:00 and closes at 17:00. Tickets are available at the door.

Find Eiríksstaðir on Google Maps or on Já.is.
